NCC joins 30th Bellwether College Consortium Event /ncc-joins-30th-bellwether-college-consortium-event/ Wed, 06 Mar 2024 18:43:29 +0000 /?p=8764

Community Colleges from across the country gathered to share best practices and innovations in education听

The Workforce Development team at 爱播视频 got the opportunity to present as a finalist in the 30th Annual Community College Futures Assembly (CCFA) hosted by the Bellwether College Consortium in San Antonio, Texas.

鈥淚t was an incredibly valuable experience because we had the chance to learn from all the other program presentations, and about the other colleges鈥 cultures and ideas,鈥 said Jon Mason, Director of Workforce Development at 爱播视频.

The Community College Futures Assembly issued a call for Bellwether Award and Legacy Award nominations in the summer of 2023, and 38 finalists were competitively chosen from a national applicant pool. Finalists represented 21 states and 34 community colleges at the 2024 event in February.听

Mason presented on NCC鈥檚 Microelectronics Boot Camp, a 10-week training that has had a 98 percent hiring rate for program grads since it launched in 2016. The Boot Camp was founded in partnership with BAE Systems, Inc., and Butch Locke, Strategic Operations Director at BAE Systems, Inc., provided the industry partner perspective on the program鈥檚 development, growth, and future sustainability.

鈥淭he event gave me a great perspective on how special the NCC boot camps are,鈥 said Locke. In particular, he said NCC stood out for its student-centered presentation and strong industry, education, and community partner relationships. 鈥淭he linkages NCC has with advocacy groups are changing lives.鈥澨

The primary purpose of the event was to share best practices and innovations among community colleges, and Mason said everyone eagerly participated.

鈥淎ll the discussions were open and welcoming, everyone was very positive. We walked away with a lot of information, and we鈥檝e brought some great ideas back to campus. We鈥檝e already started networking with one of the colleges the day after we got back,鈥 said Mason, noting one of the participants from Hawaii has already been in touch. 鈥淭hey had a lot of information about promoting cultural acceptance 鈥 being aware of your environment and having a cultural awareness on campus.鈥

Overall, Mason said it was a 鈥渉umbling experience鈥 to hear about all the great work being done by the Bellwether finalists. 鈥淲e鈥檙e a fairly small college compared to some of the other finalists, but we were well received and made great connections.鈥 NCC currently has a student population of about 1,300, and some of the finalists had about 60,000. 鈥淲e were like 鈥楾he Little Engine that Could鈥.鈥

鈥湴ナ悠 is most proud to be recognized by Bellwether for its excellence in workforce development, moreover, it is the transformation of more than 300 lives through the Microelectronics Boot Camp – of which 75 were housing insecure – that brings the greatest honor to NCC,鈥 said Lucille Jordan, President of NCC.

Nashua High Schoolers get new cybersecurity college pathway /nashua-high-schoolers-get-new-cybersecurity-college-pathway/ Thu, 18 Jan 2024 19:52:37 +0000 /?p=8702

爱播视频 and Nashua School District team up for new opportunity

High school students can take Cybersecurity courses at Nashua High School South that earn both high school and college credit through the Early College program at 爱播视频.听 听

鈥淏ecause job growth in the cybersecurity field is burgeoning, the timing of this opportunity could not be better,鈥 said Mario Andrade, Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools for the Nashua School District. 鈥淲e are grateful for the partnership with NCC because this is a great opportunity for our students to accelerate acquisition of highly marketable skills and credentials in the field. Our students are up to meeting the demand for cybersecurity specialists.鈥

Supported by a company called Paradigm, Nashua High School students can participate in a 3-year cybersecurity pathway that can lead right into the Cybersecurity Networking associate degree at 爱播视频.

鈥淧aradigm provides the curriculum, and the second-year lines up with 爱播视频,鈥 said Diane Fallier, Professor and Computer Networking/Cybersecurity Program Coordinator at NCC.

Professor Fallier said there had already been a lot of interest in the Computer Networking courses available at the high school, and the high schools wished to expand the pathway to include Cybersecurity, 鈥淭he interest has been immense from the high school students. This is the first cybersecurity program in the area for high school students.鈥

Graduates with a 2-year associate degree in Cybersecurity qualify for entry-level careers in the industry, she said. From there, graduates can choose to continue toward a bachelor鈥檚 degree supported by their employer.

鈥淵ou can get a job, and let them help you pay for tuition,鈥 said Fallier, noting that BAE is a major source of local jobs for students in cybersecurity.

鈥淭he first year is introduction to all of cybersecurity, the second year teaches the Security+ exam, which is the equivalent of the NCC course, the (CSCM150), so that鈥檚 going to be an Early College class.鈥

Early College at Your High School,鈥 formerly known as Running Start, means the course is taught at the high school and is eligible for both high school and college credit.

鈥淭he third year is exploratory; the students choose a portion of cybersecurity they would like to explore. It gives them a chance to really check out careers and what types of things people do in those careers,鈥 said Professor Fallier. 听

Nashua High School South began offering the first year of the 3-year pathway this fall, and classes go through the whole academic year. 鈥淪o, they teach in a year what we teach in a semester,鈥 she said.听

Students who complete the pathway can expect to save on their college degree if they continue studying Cybersecurity. 鈥淚f they go straight from high school to NCC, and if they鈥檝e taken the 鈥業ntroduction to Networking鈥 class and the second year of the cybersecurity pathway; they will have 6 college credits applicable to the program before they arrive, so it gives them a head start at a much lower price.鈥

While Early College courses are available at a reduced tuition cost, students can also take two courses free each academic year with the .

鈥淣ot only has 爱播视频 and the Nashua School District collaborated to provide this opportunity for high school students, but NCC and Nashua City Schools have also blazed a new trail by forming a joint advisory board to strengthen and guide the cybersecurity pathway,鈥 said Lucille Jordan, President of 爱播视频.

鈥淭here鈥檚 room for this to keep expanding,鈥 said Fallier, 鈥淎s they restructure the courses, it may become possible for them to get credit for 鈥楥omputer Architecture and Operating Systems鈥 (CSCM101). They have been teaching that material, but it鈥檚 not yet an Early College course. But when they separate the 鈥榥etworking鈥 and 鈥榗omputer architecture鈥 portions, we鈥檒l talk about making that an Early College class.鈥 听

Right now, the Cybersecurity Pathway is taught through the Nashua Technology Center at Nashua High School South. 鈥淏ut they are in talks with Nashua North to start to run the cybersecurity there because there鈥檚 enough demand to run it at both schools,鈥 said Fallier. Currently, North students can also sign up for a class at South.

NCC and YMCA of Greater Nashua continue ECE partnership /ncc-and-ymca-of-greater-nashua-continue-ece-partnership/ Fri, 12 Jan 2024 19:28:25 +0000 /?p=8675

Students on track to earn ECE Associate Teacher Certificate

Last fall, 爱播视频 and the YMCA of Greater Nashua partnered to offer Early Childhood Education (ECE) college classes at the YMCA in Merrimack, open to YMCA staff and the public. The YMCA offered on-site childcare, and Professor Lisa Furman, program coordinator for ECE at NCC, committed to teaching the course at the YMCA for the semester.

鈥淥ne of our NCC goals is to make college more accessible to our community. Offering early childhood courses at the YMCA has provided a pathway for students to pursue their college education,鈥 said Professor Furman.

The collaboration was a success, with 9 students comprising teens and adults completing the class and a mix of new and continuing students signing up for the next class in spring. 听鈥淭his opportunity has made a positive impact on students,鈥 she said.

The YMCA interviewed two of the students, adult learners and YMCA childcare staff Monica and Lynette, who thrived in the fall ECE course 鈥淕rowth and Development of the Young Child.鈥 Read their story below.

鈥淭he more knowledge early childhood educators have about children’s growth, development, and learning, the more impactful their interactions and lessons are with children, which leads to higher quality care, education, and support for families,鈥 said Professor Furman.

鈥淭he early childhood education program of 爱播视频 is proud of its work with the YMCA of Merrimack, and we look forward to a continued partnership,鈥 said Professor Furman. She said this spring, several of the same students are continuing and a few new students have joined.

鈥淓arly childhood education courses offered at the YMCA in Merrimack are open to all early childhood education professionals,鈥 said Professor Furman.

鈥淎t least four of the current students will have earned their associate teacher certificate this term as they have decided to participate in the online course of ECE 103N along with their YMCA course.听Others will have their associate teacher certificate at the end of the Fall 2024 semester.鈥

The Microelectronics Boot Camp was founded in 2016 in partnership with BAE Systems to prepare students for entry-level careers in wire/ribbon bonding and die attach for microelectronic components in manufacturing.

Butch Locke, Strategic Operations Director at BAE Systems, was part of the BAE team that developed the boot camp training, along with Kim Cadorette, Retired-Vice President of Operations. 鈥淲e were on to something special, and 7 years later and 30 cohorts with a 98 percent job placement rate; that鈥檚 a success.鈥

Locke advised graduates to try and make a difference, 鈥測ou will have these times when you鈥檒l be asked to do a little bit more, I invite you to raise your hand.鈥 听听听

Boot camp instructor Jim Flis has led the class for the past 5 years, and said this group worked hard to master the curriculum and build strong relationships with their peers over the past 10 weeks, 鈥淚鈥檇 like to congratulate each of you for the vision to take this leap.鈥

Student speaker Rose Ann Surette said while they started out nervous, they鈥檙e now ready to begin the next chapter. 鈥淟ook at us now, confident and ready to get into the field and start building our careers. We all worked hard to get to this day, and our work did not go to waste.鈥

Graduates of the 30th Microelectronics Boot Camp:听Nathaniel Bult, Hannah Cyganowski, Shannon Dionne, Michael Haney, Robert Mullen, Skye Machampassak, Karen Nguyen, Rose Ann Surette

Alumni speaker Michael Magliozzi from the 8th听graduating class shared that since he graduated 5 years ago, he鈥檚 earned his electronic engineering technology associate degree from NCC, and is now 42 days away from earning his bachelor鈥檚 in engineering from UNH Manchester. All while working at BAE Systems. 鈥淓veryone here has the same opportunities to advance through school and in your career.鈥

Lastly, President Jordan announced the Microelectronics Boot Camp program is a Bellwether Award Finalist in the category of Workforce Development.

This February, NCC will present with community colleges from around the U.S. in the final round of the Bellwether Award competition in San Antonio, Texas. A total of 30 Bellwether Finalists will compete for the 2024 Bellwether Award at the 30th Annual Community College Futures Assembly (CCFA).

About the Boot Camp

The Microelectronics Boot Camp was developed in partnership with BAE Systems to address the shortage of skilled candidates in microelectronics manufacturing. NCC also works closely with industry partners such as Draper Labs, Microsembly, Mercury Systems, L3 Harris Technologies, API Technology, MACOM, MIT Lincoln Labs, Lockheed Martin, Monzite, and more. As a founding partner, all program graduates have the opportunity to interview with BAE Systems.

Boot Camp students have ranged in age from recent high school graduates to professionals in their 60s, including veterans and workers from other industries seeking a career change. Students are frequently supported by community partners including WIOA, the Front Door Agency, and MY TURN, INC. Alumni also return to mentor each new generation of students both on campus and in the workplace.

Microelectronics Boot Camps enroll throughout the year. Sessions are听10 weeks at 40 hours per week for $5,500 per student. The boot camp is WIOA eligible. To learn more or enroll, contact Jon Mason at听jmason@ccsnh.edu, or 603.578.8900 x1763.
